So i bring you up close and personal to my coachy Dr Ezinne meribe
1. Tell us about yourself
My name is Dr. Ezinne Meribe (Dr. Zinny). I completed my primary, secondary and tertiary education in the eastern part of Nigeria, Enugu State precisely. I then moved to Lagos where I worked for about two years before I left Nigeria for my Master’s program in Public health. I love surfing the web, reading a good book and sleeping. Cooking used to be something I loved but toned down on it when I embarked on my weight loss journey cos I just cook and eat for fun. Lol.
2. What inspired your starting this weight loss support group?
Oh well, I had battled with weight loss for as long as I can remember – dating back to my high school days. To the best of my knowledge; just like I hear most people say today, I had tried everything and nothing seemed to be working.
This got worse after I gave birth. I honestly loathed how I looked, I lost my confidence and self-esteem and of course I stopped taking pictures, lol. I barely have pictures of the old me
By February 2015, I knew I had to do something so I started weaving my way around the world of weight loss. I kicked off in March 2015 by creating meal plans and following it strictly. I was just too motivated to quit. For me there was no going back, especially as I started loving the woman I was seeing in the mirror. I honestly did not put up any picture of me until around May when I had lost over 10kg. So I can certainly relate to how shy a lot of women feel about their weight or weightloss journey. Hence, I created the group as a safe haven where any woman struggling with her weight can comfortably open up because everyone on there is pursuing a similar goal and there is little or no need to be shy or feel ashamed. My weight was also something I was really shy about and never talked about it.
Funny enough, I had never joined any weight loss support group. It wasn’t until sometime in September this year, I was amazed at the number of Facebook groups that exist for almost anything you can think of.
I am building a community for people like me who would rather keep their weight/weight loss a secret, lol but would love to be in the midst of people with like minds, similar struggles and similar goals. In short, research has shown that people tend to lose more weight while in a community.
The ultimate goal of the group really is to influence every home in Nigeria to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The top 4 causes of global mortality (diabetes, obesity, heart diseases and lack of physical inactivity) are lifestyle related diseases and all these can be prevented by actively living a healthy lifestyle; most importantly the food we eat.
As a medical student and while practicing, I saw families lose their loved ones both young and old painfully either because they were ignorant at first or they did not seek medical counsel early. The underlying problem here is being uninformed, most of what is ailing us is from our relationship with the food we eat.
So I set out to simply educate women in a very informal setting where they learn the truth but still have fun. The woman is the manager of the home and once you’ve reached out to a woman, you have reached out to her husband, her mum, her dad, her siblings, her co-workers and most importantly her children – the next generation.
3. What is your advice to mums struggling with weight issues?
The most important advice will be to love your body, love where you are right now. Hating your body does not inspire or motivate you to change it. Take it one day at a time. Be consistent, Rome was not built in a day but if you stay consistent, you are bound to see results.
4. How long have you been doing this?
I started weight loss coaching for free sometime in October last year and then Zinnyslifestyle became an official brand February this year. The support group was opened in May, 2015 but we launched it with the Free Skinny Waist Challenge in June.
5. What is your major challenge?
The truth: Clients who pay and are not willing to put in the work or give up within a week.
6. How can you be contacted?
firstname.lastname@example.org or you can catch me on Facebook and Instagram as Zinnyslifestyle.
7. Do you believe in slimming teas?
No I don’t believe in slimming teas for the sole fact that I have seen firsthand the damage these teas can do to ones kidneys plus, no one knows if they are cancer causing (carcinogenic). Most of the research done on these teas are sponsored by the companies themselves so they are bound to be biased. I have worked it over 140 women and they have all lost weight and kept it off without slimming teas.
8. Do you have plans of coaching men too?
Yes, I do. Only privately and if their wives are involved and quite supportive too. Men can also join my membership site which is launching in November. In the group programs, they will feel so out of place as the women are a lot more.
9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years
5 years from now, Zinnyslifestyle will be a household name all over Nigeria. The goal is not just to lose weight but to keep families healthy and keep our loved ones alive and well for a very long time to come. So we are building a generation of actively healthy people, one family at a time.
10. How important is nutrition to you?
Nutrition is everything. There is this saying that “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.”
Weight loss or a healthy lifestyle isn’t synonymous with deprivation or malnutrition. One should be eating enough to nourish their body, feed it with right kind of nutrients and still lose weight. Malnutrition is the major reason for cravings and with these cravings, we tend to eat amiss and gain more weight.
11. Will you strongly suggest your clients follow a better diet to improve their fitness goals?
Yes, very strongly because weight loss or fitness is mostly about what you eat. Check out athletes and body builders, they can’t afford to eat amiss. 99% of the time, their diet is what most people will perceive as rigid.
12. How do you balance being a mom, wife and weightloss coach?
Well, I have come to understand that balance is a myth. One must always make way for the other. So for my sanity, to spend quality time with family and keep the house in order, I make sure I don’t work on weekends. As much as possible, I take Wednesdays off too or work half day. Some days I make sure everything is automated and I just play with my little girl all day long.
